Victoria was part of a five ship Spanish expedition with the goal to find a westward route to the Spice Islands. The expedition was a success finding its way to the islands however the success came with huge loses. Victoria was the only ship (of five) that successfully completed the expedition, she returned to Spain with only 18 of the original 237 men. The fallen men included Captain Magellan who died prior to arriving at the Spice Islands. Sebastian Elcano commanded the rest of the expedition, upon returning to Spain, Victoria became the first ship to sail around the world. As someone else said, it is smaller than I imagined. The one I received appears to sit at more of an angle than what is pictured, but I imagine that is only due to the nature of being made by hand. Also, I have to say the etching of the continents does NOT look the way it does in the picture. Everything looks a bit squished and oddly skewed (see photo). Regardless, I think it would be a wonderful gift for anyone who either collects decanters or who actually drinks liquor and wants a pretty decanter to put it in. This is a gift for my husband for Christmas and I'm sure he is going to love it also. Even came with a stopper, which I wasn't sure it would. Overall it is a beautiful piece, especially if you're not trying to pick out countries (haha!). I would suggest this to family and friends, but I would NOT suggest this if you are thinking of buying it for someone who is really into geography. Maybe I just got a bad one, but it doesn't look so bad that I will return it.***Update***01/16/2017The company recently reached out to me wanting to provide a better product. One with better etching. They asked for my address and nothing more. I received the new decanter and it looks great! The etching is much more accurate and not at all distorted like the first one I received. I was surprised to hear from them even though my original review was still four stars. They definitely earned the fifth star by going above and beyond what most companies are willing to do nowadays.I love it! It came in packaged beautifully. There is no way that could have broken in the shipping process. It sits in a tight, firm and cushioned foam that keeps it from shifting. The etching is beautiful-- wish they had the Hawaiian islands in the design... I'm from Hawai'i and it was missing... Too small, maybe? Oh well. It's a gorgeous piece. I bought this for my beau for Christmas. Martell cognac to go with it and a brandy/cognac warmer with a few cigars. Perfect set for the decanter. It is small, but it holds 750ml. I don't suppose decanters need to be all that large anyway. It's perfect for a table top, counter or display case because of its size... Were it any larger it might take up too much real estate anyway. I know beau will love it. An even bigger plus-- it said it was going to arrive between Dec 22 and the 31st-- and it ended up coming in on the 17th!! I was so happy about that because I can give it to him on Christmas! The customer service was phenomenal thus I changed the rating.Old Review:I was so excited for this as I am a bourbon enthusiast so I spent extra on this one as it looked beautiful and had solid reviews. Here are my issues - the globe is incredibly thin (which I could get over) but I did not receive the nice looking round glass stopper pictured and to take it one step further, the globe does not fit in the base properly because the arm is too short. Again, I had high expectations and was let down. At $100 and at the high-end of this market, I should not have to deal with this.I bought this for my husband as a Christmas gift and I was so excited when I got it that I just had to pull it out and look at it before wrapping. I am SO happy. I carefully made sure I knew what I was ordering, so I was not surprised by the smaller size. It's not minuscule, but it is not a large decanter. The glass is somewhat delicate, but my kids will not be anywhere near it, an attentive adult hand is all it needs and it won't break with normal handling. The stopper is completely made of glass, which I love. And what I like most is that it actually looks like the Eart. The geography, while not perfect, is pretty impressive and accurate. Well done!I bought this for my husband as an anniversary gift. I love it and more importantly he does too! At 1000 mL I was imagining the decanter being the size of a bowling ball. I wanted something small and elegant that would sit at the corner of the bar. When it arrived, I was pleasantly surprised that it is small and elegant! We filled it with an entire wine bottle full of water and there was still enough room left in it to give the effect that the ship was floating inside. It is perfect! The workmanship is gorgeous and Cape Coral Housewares customer service is excellent.Such a cool decanter. Bought it as a gift for my boyfriend and he really enjoys it. We don’t decant much alcohol so we use it as a reservoir for our barrel aged cocktails once they are done aging to free up the barrel. The glass is sturdy and beautifully etched. The wooden frame is not very well put together and poor quality. A little wood glue sturdies it right up.The bottle is really nice, but the stand is something to be desired. For being "hand made", it isn't very nice: it looks like it was nailed together in 5 minutes, the wood is very rough (it could've easily been sanded at least a little), and the stain or finish used makes the wood look... green. I could've made something better than this. Maybe all of the $99 went into the bottle and not the stand, but geez does it look awful. This is supposed to be a display piece!Very elegant, will be a present, just really hoped for a darker wood with blond highlites in it, like some of the pictures showed, I received a more gray wood base, still a very beautiful piece
